Skyward Project Heads for the runway with successful STEM Networking Event in Partnership with BCP Council
Bournemouth, UK, 18th September — Skyward, an ambitious STEM education initiative aiming to revolutionise technical learning by creating a STEM education centre aboard a retired Boeing 737 airliner, recently hosted a highly successful networking event in collaboration with the Economic Development Department (Engineering & Manufacturing Cluster) at BCP Council.
The event brought together over 70 attendees from local schools, colleges, engineering firms, aviation companies, and community organisations, all united by a shared commitment to advancing STEM education and technical skills across Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole.
The event featured a strong lineup of speakers who each brought valuable insight and energy to the discussion. Councillor Richard Herrett, Portfolio Holder for the Economy at BCP Council, opened with a message of support for innovation and the vital role of technical education in supporting local economic growth.
Pete Burden, CEO of KDC Group, spoke about the company’s investment in future talent and shared their journey so far, emphasising the importance of projects like Skyward in building a sustainable future for the region’s aerospace and engineering sectors.
Adding an educational perspective, James Hills, Director of Learning for Engineering, Professional and Public Industries, highlighted the need for stronger links between education and industry, underlining the importance of hands-on, real-world training to bridge the skills gap.
Closing the speaker session, Richard Griffin, Founder and Trustee of Skyward, outlined the vision behind the project, progress made to date, and the next steps — including the launch of a Crowdfunder and the search for a permanent site to establish a dedicated technical institution.
The event was generously hosted by SmartBase Bournemouth, providing an ideal setting for collaboration and discussion.
“It was incredibly inspiring to have so many like-minded individuals in one room,” said Duncan Newman, Economic Development – Engineering and Manufacturing Sector Lead at BCP Council. “There was a real sense of shared purpose and enthusiasm. Skyward has enormous potential to become a cornerstone for technical education in our region, and we’re proud to be supporting its early development.”
Skyward is now entering its funding phase, with a Crowdfunder and full fundraising campaign in development. A comprehensive business plan is already in place, and a suitable site for the aircraft has been identified, pending further engagement with key stakeholders at Bournemouth Airport.
“This event was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the energy and appetite for a project like Skyward,” said Richard. “We’re building more than just an education centre — this is about long-term investment in skills, innovation, and opportunity for the next generation.”
